The UK is getting older. But not all at once.
The UK's busiest age is 35. By 2050, the population aged 85+ is projected to more than double. From Live Aid to Doctor Who, the age chart has quite a soundtrack.
Britain’s most popular age? 35.
There are a projected 982,419 people aged 35 in the UK in 2026. Most were born in 1990 or 1991, around the time the World Wide Web was starting to make itself known.
So much for everyone getting older. Apparently, we’ve got plenty of thirtysomethings too.
1. Every age has a backstory
Look along the population chart and you’ll spot echoes of British history.
People aged around 77–78 were born near the NHS’s launch in 1948. Those in their early sixties arrived around the 1960s baby boom.
And the people turning 30 this year? They were born around the year the Spice Girls released Wannabe.
Yes, that was 1996. Sorry.
2. The balance is shifting
In 2026, 19.6% of the UK is projected to be aged 65 or over. By 2050, that’s 24.9% — almost one in four.
Meanwhile, the share aged under 15 falls from 16.4% to 13.6%.
Here’s a way to feel those years passing: someone born in 1985, the year Queen played Live Aid, turns 65 in 2050.
Freddie Mercury probably didn’t see that coming.
3. The biggest change is at the oldest ages
The UK’s total population grows just 4.1% in the projection from 2026 to 2050.
But the number aged 85 and over more than doubles: from 1.80 million to 3.67 million. That’s 103.7% growth.
For perspective, someone born when Doctor Who began in 1963 will turn 87 in 2050.
No TARDIS required.
The interesting bit: Britain isn’t just getting older. Its oldest age groups are growing much faster than the population overall.
That’s worth remembering when we think about housing, health and care. Even if the soundtrack is excellent.
