TODAY’S DATA LENS

Position beats area.

Square Today’s Data Lens card comparing values 40 and 70 encoded as circle areas with the same values encoded as dot positions on a shared 0–100 scale.

Observation

The same two values are encoded twice: first by circle area, then by position on a shared scale. Cleveland and McGill’s graphical-perception framework ranked position along a common scale above area for quantitative judgement. Giving the eye a common ruler makes the comparison more precise.

Same values. Better decoding.
