Tom Hanks found another gear in 1992

A fresh IMDb snapshot reveals the extraordinary 1992–2002 run in Tom Hanks’ film career—and the familiar cowboy who kept it going.

I first charted Tom Hanks’ filmography in 2024. Two years later, the same subject produced a much better question: when did all those familiar films turn into an extraordinary run?

Same actor. Different question.

The original post began with a colour palette and fitted the films into a template. This time, I started with a fresh IMDb snapshot and let the pattern choose the charts.

That changes the story. This is no longer a list of Tom Hanks films from best to worst. It is a career with a very obvious gear change.

The gear change

Across 15 films from 1980 to 1991, the average IMDb rating is 6.05. Not one reaches 7.5.

Then comes 1992 and A League of Their Own. From there, the chart changes shape.

Scatter plot of IMDb film rating by year for 61 Tom Hanks narrative-film principal credits from 1980 to 2026. Films from 1992 to 2002 are highlighted in blue. Forrest Gump is highest at 8.8, and a dashed line marks the overall median of 6.9.
The 14 rated narrative films in the 1992–2002 run average 7.79; ten rate 7.5 or higher.

The 14 films released from 1992 to 2002 average 7.79. Ten rate 7.5 or higher. The run includes Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Toy Story, Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, Cast Away and Catch Me If You Can.

Ten in eleven

The comparison is fairly stark: none of the 15 films before the run reaches 7.5. During it, 10 of 14 do. After it, the figure drops to 6 of 32.

None of 15 films before the run rate 7.5 or higher, compared with 10 of 14 from 1992–2002 and 6 of 32 afterwards.

The densest patch arrives from 1999 to 2003. Five films in that five-year window average exactly 8.00: The Green Mile, Toy Story 2, Cast Away, Catch Me If You Can and Road to Perdition.

The later career is not a collapse. Strong films keep appearing. They are simply less concentrated than they were during that remarkable run.

Woody kept going

One thread crosses the peak and carries on for 31 years.

Line chart of IMDb ratings for five Toy Story films from 1995 to 2026. Ratings are 8.3, 7.9, 8.3, 7.6 and 7.4. Every point sits above the dashed Tom Hanks career median of 6.9; Toy Story 5 is highlighted in red.
All five Toy Story films rate above Tom Hanks’ overall film median of 6.9; their franchise median is 7.9 across 1995–2026.

All five Toy Story films sit above Hanks’ overall career median of 6.9. Together, they have a median rating of 7.9.

So, if the original aim was to make Friday-night film choosing slightly easier, the data has landed somewhere reassuringly familiar: Woody remains the safest bet in the toy box.

TLDR

Tom Hanks’ film ratings changed sharply in 1992. Ten of his next 14 films rate 7.5 or higher on IMDb, compared with none of the previous 15. The broad peak eventually passed, but every Toy Story film has remained above his 6.9 career median.

simple charts clear stories.
